Well, first I can tell you that the book I'm working on is not Flash related and is more in-depth than a simple 'tutorial chapter'. second, unlike my early childish and somewhat selfish attitude of simply wanting to write something 'cool' so others would think I'm similarly 'cool', I've become a little wiser and a little more humble. My motivation now is in helping others better understand a topic, regardless of their knowledge of who I am. Don't get me wrong, it is still a bit of an ego booster to be a published author, but I really just want to contribute back to the global community from which I've learned so much in the past decade. Plus, in contributing back, I only learn and absorb even more while I research further into the topics for the book.

I'd imagine writing a book would be a long and tedious task, and at times cumbersome enough to cast aside where it is to be forgotten... like your Flash chapter. Especially a technical book, where there is competition over the same material in different media. The Internet is the motherload of information exchange, and although for technicalities and friendly instruction nothing beats a good book, I can't help but wonder if factors like this might contribute to an eventual apathy. And afterall, Internet Flash tutorials were weak at best five years ago, so competition now is even more daunting.

I guess my question is,
Where do you find your motivation, and what will make you finish this time?
